As the county only begins to recover from the previous storms, Storm Jorge rolls in bringing high winds but less rainfall than Dennis and Ciara.

Storm Jorge began yesterday with rain warnings which will last until 9am today but today and tomorrow the county will be looking at yellow weather warnings for wind.

Whilst initial predictions for Storm Jorge estimated that there could have been 40-60mm rainfall on Friday, the Environment Agency recorded less than anticipated and believes the situation is improving.

The storm will also bring winds of up to 70mph in areas around the coast and on higher ground.

People in areas that are prone to flooding will undoubtedly be worried about what this latest band of bad weather may bring.

Stewart Mounsey, the Environment Agency’s flood risk manager, said: “Overall, we’re expecting less than Storm Ciara and Storm Dennis, it’s an improved picture than what we have been expecting over the last few days.

“The Environment Agency is still ready and partners are still ready in terms of response."

They anticipate that there will be 30-40mm of rainfall on Friday night going into Saturday but this will not have as much impact as Storm Ciara or Storm Dennis.

It is also anticipated that flood alerts will go out but they aren’t expecting to issue any flood warnings in Cumbria.

Mr Mounsey said: “There will be some flood alerts that will go out, so that is our lowest level of warning, we’re not expecting any flood warnings which is the next one up in terms of ‘take action’.

“It’s still looking unsettled for the next week or so, so I think unfortunately we’re going to have to keep an eye on the weather for a little bit longer.”

This storm is different to the previous two to batter the county as there are warnings for both wind and rain.

The Met Office spokesperson said: “It’s a different storm entirely so with Storm Ciara, it was very much the wind and with Storm Dennis it was very much the rain.

“Storm Jorge is a bit of both.”
