Wind gusts of up to 70mph are predicted as Storm Jorge hits Cumbria.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind, which will be in place from midday today (February 29) until 3pm tomorrow.

Strong winds are expected to impact the county, with some travel disruption likely.

What to expect:

  • Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport expected, with some journeys taking longer;
  • Delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges;
  • Some short term loss of power and other services;
  • Coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities affected by spray and/or large waves.

Winds will strengthen through the afternoon and persist through Saturday evening and overnight into Sunday.

Gusts of 50-60 mph are expected quite widely, with gusts to up to 70 mph in exposed coasts and hills.

Heavy rain will be an additional hazard, with this falling as snow for a time across higher ground.
