Businesses around East Lancashire struggling due to the coronavirus pandemic are reminding people they are still open and need support from the community.

As Prime Minister Boris Johnson laid out plans to avoid social contact and going to many places like pubs, clubs, restaurants and theatres, many smaller independent businesses remain open with either takeaway options or simply because they cannot afford to close.

These smaller businesses are now calling on the strength of the community to keep them going.

Salim Mohammed’s Khyber Café in Whalley Range, Blackburn is now offering a delivery service.

Mr Mohammed said: “Khyber is open for business delivering throughout Blackburn and surrounding areas.

“As well as recently obtaining five-star hygiene rating we have taken extra measures since the outbreak of this virus to keep our premises, our staff and customers as safe as possible from the virus.”

Not every business in East Lancashire can afford to close, with many still offering services to customers such as the Wensley Road Launderette.

Owner Tracy Johnson posted: “As you know my OCD for cleaning is legendary.

“I’m now in hyper drive, and all surfaces are being very regularly sanitised.

“My delivery service to the elderly is now including any groceries they may be stuck for, so just let me know in plenty of time.”

Checks and Greys in the Cathedral Square in Blackburn is also offering a delivery service, where customers can order online and pick up at the café.

Matt Hunter of the catering management said: “Customers can order pies, lasagne, chicken wings, and desserts such as apple crumble along with others.

“To order they can go online, choose what they want, pay for it, and collect it inside.

“We have a limit on how many people can come in at one time, so we are taking it very seriously."

Shabana Motorwala from Roomali Dining also confirmed their restaurant would remain open for anyone still wishing to eat out.

She said: “We are open as usual in addition to already having five-star hygiene rating, our team have taken the necessary steps to ensure the highest levels of hygiene and safety.

“As a bonus, we are also extending our special offer during these turbulent times."
