POLICE have been on the lookout for any ‘irresponsible’ pubs and eateries which have remained open despite the Government ordering them to close on Friday.

On Saturday night eagle-eyed members of the public informed the police that a pub in Barrow might still be open, with Barrow Police tweeting: “We are going to check this out. We have powers under the licensing act to take landlords to review and have licences removed permanently.

“It is wholly irresponsible.

“Everyone just do as asked for the sake of the many.”

Police later confirmed staff at the pub in question were simply cleaning the premises.

A member of the public also expressed concern that a pub near Ambleside was ignoring the Government’s instructions on Saturday.

However, a spokesman for the pub told The Mail: “Whilst we have been selling our remaining stock from outside the inn, our bar and indoor facilities were closed. Sorry if you have been misinformed.”

A number of pubs issued statements at the time of closure, including The Crown, with a spokesman for the Walney pub saying on Facebook: “To all our loyal customers, the time has come where we have to unfortunately close our doors until further notice.

“We will no longer be offering a takeaway service.

“Please everyone follow the advice from our government, let’s all pull together. Let’s self-isolate and (keep) social distance.”

A statement from Crofters, Barrow, said: “Following government guidelines we will be closed until further notice. We hope to see you all again soon but in the meantime stay safe. Love from Jon, Jill and the staff of Crofters.”
