ORGANISERS of a popular agricultural show say they had no other choice but to cancel this year's event.

As a consequence of the decision made by the government last night, the Skelton Show Horticultural and Agricultural Society has announced the cancellation of this year's event that was due to take place on July 4 - this is despite the committee's optimism and stoical attitude to try and carry on.

Colin Atkinson, show chairman, said “As a committee, normally we worry about whether the rain will ‘stop play’ but this year in these unprecedented times the decision to go ahead is now no longer an option and out of our hands. We know our traditional agricultural show is a highlight of the year for many people, including our exhibitors and traders, but our enthusiasm won’t be permanently dampened - we are already working on the 2021 show which will be held on Saturday 3rd July. We look forward to seeing you all next year.”

Trade stands already booked have the option of rolling their fee forward to 2021 or asking for a refund.

Due to the current situation, refunds will only be made by BACS transfer and anyone requiring a refund should contact the treasurer, Charlotte Pollock.

Mr Atkinson added: “Please stay safe, heed all the government advice and look after yourself and your loved ones.”
