A DALTON-in-Furness pub was gearing up to host its own miniature version of the Glastonbury music festival 20 years ago.

Daltonbury 2000 was to be held at The Cavendish Arms from April 27 to 30 - with bands playing in the function room and the beer garden.

In March 2000, the Gazette’s sister paper The Mail wrote: “The Cavendish Arms’ management at Market Place hope that its wall-to-wall weekend of jazz, rock, blues and cover bands may become an annual event.

“Tenants Ian Atkinson and Donna Stokes have booked scores of local musicians including The Lakes Blues Band, Can, The Furness Folk Tradition and Jazz SM.”

Going further back, in November 1995 the new faces behind the bar at The Cavendish Arms were retired submariner Murdoch MacDonald and his wife Eileen - taking over from Gordon and Eileen Brown.

Dalton even had its own official ale taster to sample beer in all the town’s drinking establishments and decide who served up the best pint.

In May 1994 the award went to the Golden Ball.
