RESIDENTS are being urged not to release sky lanterns as a way of paying tribute to the NHS.

The fire service is discouraging the use of lanterns to thank key workers after a number of posts were shared on social media.

Sky lanterns present a fire hazard and can also be dangerous for farm animals.

Residents who wish to show their support for the NHS and healthcare workers are instead asked to take part in the weekly round of applause on Thursday at 8pm.
