A KENDAL grandmother is bringing a smile to her neighbours by donning fancy dress as she works in her garden.

Jane Youdell, 91, has brought joy to residents on Garth Row as she dressed up as a dragon whilst gardening.

A keen gardener, Jane began wearing the Dragon onesie to help others cope during the Covid 19 lockdown.

Jane has two children, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Before retirement she previously worked as a teacher.

Fabia Tate, one of Jane’s granddaughters, is very proud of her grandmother.

The 29-year-old originally saw that her grandmother was dressing up from a picture sent to her over Facebook.

Fabia said: “Given her age she is self-isolating by herself and came up with this ingenious way of cheering up the locals.

“Despite being 91 she is a very keen gardener and decided that she would start gardening in a fancy dress.

“Her first attempt was when she dressed up in a dragon onesie to cheer up passers by and prompt some self-isolating conversations over the garden fence. So far she has had a 100% success rate”.

Jane wishes to advertise a social isolation tea dance in the future. This would involve her playing a record in her garden for a five minute dance in the street

She is hoping that some of her neighbours will come join her at a safe distance.

"I love to know that her outfits are spreading happiness to people all over Cumbria," added Fabia.

“We are all absolutely loving seeing her being so positive as she gets through isolation.

“The entire street absolutely love it and she has neighbours visiting her, to speak with her over the fence of course, every day.

“It sparks conversation and community engagement.

“She always used to dress up when we were kids at parties for us.

“She is generating a sense of community and best of all is producing a few smiles along the way.

"I couldn’t be more proud of her, she’s an inspiration. She has more outfits planned for the future."
