A SPECIAL educational needs teacher from Staveley has finished her new children’s book about a mermaid living in a tarn.

Chloe Wilson, who works at Ambleside Primary School, has launched her picture book titled ‘The Mermaid of Loughrigg Tarn’.

“The book combines the poetic magic of a picture book with a nature hunt and map which will encourage children to explore the outdoors,” she said.

“Thirty pence from every copy sold will be donated to Friends of The Earth, the charity I proudly support.”

Although the book has not yet been published, it has already raised £4,200 via a Kickstarter campaign.

Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects where people can pledge money to make the project happen.

The page was created a week ago, with a target to raise £5,500 in 30 days.

Local artist Becca Hall was commissioned to illustrate the book, which is aimed at five to seven year olds.

Previously the pair worked together on Ms Wilson’s first creation ‘Dragon’s Breath and Yellow Wellingtons’, which she sells on her Etsy page.

“This is a perfect time to launch the project as children’s mental health is so important during these unprecedented times,” she said.

“This story explores complex themes of loss, self-acceptance and hope, and makes them accessible.”

“Teaching our children that they have all they need within themselves to flourish is, I think, a fundamental lesson.”

Growing up near Loughrigg Tarn, Ms Wilson has said it is a favourite place of hers.

“I think it’s one of those places that has something magical about it.”
