CORONAVIRUS looks set to wipe out Cumbria’s agricultural show season which pulls in hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and brings boost to the local economy.

While many of the county’s largest agricultural shows have already been cancelled, others have come to a halt after the government issued advice against large public gatherings amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Casualties already include the Hawkshead Show which is the second year in a row it will not take place, with rain forcing cancellation in 2019.

The show would have seen visitors descend on Hawkshead Hall Farm for livestock judging and other activities.

Last month, the popular Ulverston and North Lonsdale Show also announced it would not go ahead with its event, which was scheduled for July 29.

Organisers of Coniston County Fair, due to be held on Sunday July 19, have equally announced its cancellation.

The Black Combe Country Fair is ‘waiting to see what the situation will be’ before cancelling its August event.

Another major county show, the Westmorland Show, due to take place in September, is also waiting it out.

A statement on their website declared the situation was out of their hands, but ‘whilst there is hope, we will continue to plan and make arrangements for the ‘best one-day Show in the country’.

Organisers said if would operate within government guidance.

However, currently the hugely popular Cartmel Show is still set to go ahead for its planned date of August 5.

The management committee said it was ‘closely monitoring the Covid-19 situation’ and will make a decision in the coming weeks.

There has also been no official cancellation announcements for Lowick Show which is scheduled to take place in early September.

The Lakeland Country Fair held in Torver is also still set to go ahead for its 2020 event while Grasmere Sports and Show is still aiming for its bank holiday weekend date on August 30.
