HOUGUN Manor might look like any other country estate in Britain but it is unique in one aspect.

That is because anyone can buy a five square feet section of the Coniston estate and call themselves a lord or lady.

For a fee, anyone can bestow themselves with the title 'Lord or Lady of the Manor' and claim to own a small section of the country estate, which sits off the west shore of Coniston Water.

On the website LordTitles, a pack giving a certificate, personal land dedication, coat of arms and honorific title can be purchased for less than £25.

The title pack is described by LordTitles as ‘the perfect instant gift’. Customer testimonials on the website describe how people have bought the titles as unusual gifts for family members and spouses. Even singer 'Lord' Olly Murs got one for his 30th birthday.

"Most people love the idea and the packs but we do appreciate that they may not be for everyone,” the website says.

Amid the coronavirus crisis, the company has turned to delivering the title packs digitally.

According to the firm, owners of the packs are then allowed to call themselves a lord on debit cards and credit cards as well as membership cards and stationery.

Within most legal jurisdictions, should you wish to change your honorific title to lord or lady then you can do so at any time, providing you do not intend to deceive or defraud another person or purport your title to be a peerage.

The 90-acre Hougun estate lies four miles south of Coniston and is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Part of the Cumbria Way crosses the land.

LordTitles said its business was facing ‘severe disruption’ during the coronavirus crisis and was unable discuss its products further.
