Cartmel AFC is preparing for its future and ensuring its survival.

Cartmel AFC is one of hundreds of clubs throughout the country suffering during the Covid lockdown.

But the club is working hard to make plans and raise much needed funds to ensure its continuation after the crisis is over.

Fun raising activities included football cards and the 100-club draw which took place recently with some proceeds raised going towards supporting local charities and key workers, as well as St Mary's Hospice and Lancaster Royal Infirmary.

First team manger Andrew Kendall said: “As a committee we have been keen to make some changes and try new challenges.

"Around Christmas, we decided to put our plans into place ahead of the 2020/21 season.

“We had started the improvement works on our pavilion with our close friends at Cartmel Cricket Club, and a lot of effort has gone into building a new referees changing room, upgrading the showers, training floodlights and refurbishing the clubhouse inside and out.

“Our main fund raising effort every year comes from our members working at Cartmel Races on behalf of the club, but with holding a usual race meeting looking ever more challenging this year we aren’t expecting to raise this much needed and relied on income this year.”

As the season was brought to a close, Cartmel’s three teams were picking up form and the club was still in the hunt for two trophies.

The first team was on a great run in the Lancashire Amateur Cup getting to the quarter finals in a competition which started with more than 150 teams across the North West of England.

The future also looks bright with a lot of young players developing and moving into the first team.

Chairman Steve Chambers said: “We are unfortunately the only surviving Senior Football Club in the Grange area.

“We provide a much-needed interest and hobby for a lot of local players and club members, and we want to provide the best facilities and conditions for these members that we can.”

Cartmel have been indebted to their sponsors, Cockles of Cartmel, Cartmel Races and The Kings Arm.
