TENS of thousands of pounds have been saved by Cumbria Constabulary thanks to free fuel being provided by the company BP during the coronavirus lockdown.

A constabulary spokeswoman said BP’s offer saved Cumbria’s force £34,504 on fuel between March 21 and the end of April.

Cumbria’s Police and Crime Commissioner Peter McCall said the offer had ‘really supported’ the county’s police officers.

“This is a very generous offer from BP and has really supported Cumbria’s police officers patrolling across the county and encouraging social distancing where possible," he said.

“Our police officers have been working extremely hard during the Government’s COVID-19 restrictions.

“They put themselves at risk every day when they head out on patrol and never know what they might face.

“It’s fantastic to see such a large company acknowledge this and offer support to police and other emergency services in the county."
