LAST week’s picture - above - showed the part of the plaque on a house in Milnthorpe Road where the portrait painter George Romney lived for a while.
Romney was born in Dalton in 1734. He came to Kendal to be an apprentice in Stramongate to Christopher Steele of Redman’s Yard. He left his wife behind and travelled to York, London and Italy. Ill health brought him home and he died in 1802.
