A MAN has been arrested in connection with a suspected aggravated burglary in an Eden town.

A Cumbria Constabulary spokesman said the alleged incident in Appleby-in-Westmorland occurred yesterday evening.

The spokesman said: "Police were contacted at 7.15pm with the report a man had entered a house on Scattergate Close holding an air pistol.

"The victims of this incident were not injured and an air pistol was located nearby and has been seized by officers."

The spokesman said a 46-year-old man from Appleby was subsequently arrested 'on suspicion of aggravated burglary and possession of a controlled class B drug' and remained in police custody for questioning.

Detective Sergeant Sarah Kay, of the North Cumbria Crime and Safeguarding Team, said: “We would like to reassure local residents that a thorough investigation is under way to establish the full circumstances of last night’s incident in Appleby.

“We can confirm a man is currently being questioned by officers in connection with the incident.

“Incidents such as this are rare and we would like to reassure people there is no perceived risk to any member of the public.”
