Firefighters from Kendal and Grange rescued a cow after it got stuck in marsh land at Meathop Moss, Witherslack, on Sunday morning. Crews from Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service worked with Bay Search and Rescue and a local vet to lift the cow to safety.
The cow, a Belted Galloway, had wandered for about a mile along the boardwalk at the nature reserve before becoming trapped in a bog. Fire crews used a winch to haul out the cow and spent nearly four hours at the scene.
Station manager Jamie Coward said: “The cow had sunk down to its belly and was quite distressed. It was a really good team effort by everyone involved and we were able to extricate the cow and lead it to safety.”
It was a very busy Sunday morning for the firefighters who had earlier spent around five hours tackling a hay barn fire at Levens.
