MAGISTRATES have jailed a Carlisle man after he admitted two charges of assaulting police officers.

Ashley David McCluskey, 28, of North Street, Denton Holme, was jailed for a total of 98 days.

The committed the police assaults committed in Carlisle on May 28, the city's Rickergate court heard.

For those two offences, the defendant was given a 70 day jail term.

Magistrates were told that those offences meant that McCluskey was in breach of suspended 28 day jail term that had been imposed by the same court in November last year.

Explaining their sentence, magistrates said they regarded the offences as serious because the defendant had been in drink at the time and he had committed a series of offences, using his shod foot as a weapon against the two officers whom he assaulted.

The defendant must pay one of his victims £100 compensation and the other one £50.
