People returning to the UK from Spain (including Spain's islands) will now have to self-isolate for two weeks.
The new rules come into effect from midnight tonight (July 25).
The significant change comes as cases of COVID-19 in Spain have continued to rise dramatically in the past few days, with just over 900 new cases of the virus reported on Friday.
The government has encouraged people currently on holiday in Spain to follow local rules, return home as usual, and check the Foreign Office's travel advice website for more information.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is now advising against all but essential travel to mainland Spain, this particular advice does not cover the Canary Islands or the Balearic Islands because travel advice is based on the risk to the individual traveller and COVID-19 infection rates are lower on Spain's islands compared with mainland Spain.
Those returning from the Canary or Balearic Islands will still have to self-isolate for two weeks on their return to the UK.
The devolved administrations are taking the same course of action, meaning travellers arriving from Spain into any part of the UK will have to self- isolate for two weeks.
The government has urged employers to be understanding of the situation with their employees.
