Pet owners are being warned of the increased risk of dogs picking up pests on pet-friendly staycations.

With many opting for an English break this summer due to Covid-19, tourists are being urged to keep their eyes peeled for fleas, ticks and worms.

Pet care experts, Bob Martin, has warned that an "ultra-high itch-count" has been forecast across the UK, especially Cumbria, Cornwall and Wales, with the hot weather and hundreds of holidaymakers creating the perfect conditions for the pests to spread.

Aurelie Gayraud, senior brand manager at Bob Martin, said: "We’re all keen to get our getaways underway after the ease of lockdown.

"We know everyone wants to enjoy the beautiful British countryside and make the most of the summer, but the influx of holidaymakers could be bringing some less desirable tourists along with us so we want to educate pet owners about concentrations of flea and tick infestations."

She continued: “We’ve seen some really unusual weather patterns across the UK in recent months, which have proved ideal breeding grounds for fleas and ticks.

“It’s really important for all pet owners to keep on top of preventative and curative solutions to avoid the ‘itch count’, and to ensure they’re aware of the risks associated with flea, tick and worm infestations.”

Ways to keep on top of the problems include; use flea shampoo or tablets, use a spot-on treatment, vacuuming when and where you can, and spray furniture with flea spray.
