David Dunn says he will have no problems with Barrow AFC’s underdog status in the approaching League Two season.

The new Holker Street chief says he is happy for his side to go under the radar as they prepare for their first season back in the Football League for 48 years.

Ian Evatt’s successor expects few neutral observers to back Barrow for glory in League Two but Dunn believes they will be keen to surprise a few judges.

“I’m sure we’re going to be underdogs in the league but that’s fine, we’ll go quietly about our business and do it in the right way,” he said.

“We’ll prepare as best we can and make sure we’re ready to go.

“It’s a big challenge. I look around and see things happening; it’s a down-to-earth club that has come from non-league and is looking forward to making small strides to improve.

“I’m ambitious, and I know the club want to do well, but we have to be realistic.

“Our players don’t have too much league experience but I’m confident they can make that jump up. I think we’ll be competitive, so who knows - maybe we can surprise a few people.”

Dunn has made a number of signings so far with ex-Man Utd midfielder Callum Gribbin joining Bobby Burns, Mike Jones, Tom Beadling, Matt Platt, James Jones and Luke James at Holker Street.

Defender Connor Brown is set to sign a new deal while there have been further off-field developments at the Progression Solicitors Stadium, in the form of a new irrigation and sprinkler system, while a roof is being installed at the Holker Street End.

Dunn’s ability to make an impact from the dugout will also be a key feature and the ex-Blackburn player told the official EFL podcast he has picked up good vibes at Barrow.

“Barrow are going in the right direction and that’s one of the reasons I took the job on;” he said. “As soon as I came through the door I had a good feeling about the club and the owners and want to repay them with good results.

“As soon as you come through the turnstiles here, you get the feeling that everyone in the area is on board. As soon as fans are allowed to come back into the stadium, I’m sure they’ll make it a brilliant atmosphere.”
