The pre-season friendly between Workington Reds and Carlisle United has been called off after a Reds player tested positive for Covid-19.

Reds informed Carlisle on Friday that a test result for one member of their squad, following a contact training session on Tuesday, had returned positive.

The clubs quickly agreed that the game at Borough Park - due to kick off at 3pm today - should be cancelled in the interests of the safety of all concerned.

A scheduled youth team game between the two clubs at Creighton last night was also called off as a result.

Reds chairman Les Byers told the News & Star that the club's players were now self-isolating for a period of 10 days starting from Tuesday.

He said the player who had tested positive was not showing any symptoms but it was right to call the game off as a precaution.

Reds added in a statement: "Under regulations, social distancing measures must be applied.

"We have moved quickly to ensure that the safety of our staff, players and those of United, remains paramount."

The game had been due to take place behind closed doors.

It would have been Carlisle's second pre-season game and a third summer friendly for Danny Grainger's Reds.
