A BRIDGE has finally opened for pedestrians.

Cumbria County Council announced the new permanent bridge in Pooley Bridge, which crosses the River Eamont, is ready for pedestrians.

A council spokesperson said: "We think the stainless steel single span bridge looks fab."

Yesterday (September 11) saw the removal of the temporary footbridge, which had kept the bridge's namesake village open for business since construction began in September last year.

The original bridge was devastated by Storm Desmond in 2015, when it was washed away by floodwater.

The Cumbria County Council project, which is being carried out by contractors Eric Wright Civil Engineering Ltd with their design partner GHD, hopes to see traffic passing once again over the river next month.
