WE are often being reminded of of the benefits of physical exercise and the fact that most of us should do more.

Yet, keeping our mind active - particularly in the current climate - is equally important.

Many of us regard ourselves as ‘too old’ to learn a new skill.

However, doing so is more vital than ever as we age.

Undoubtedly there are natural changes to our brain as we get older which can slow certain cognitive functions.

But, challenging our brain with mental exercise is believed to activate processes that help maintain individual brain cells and stimulate communication among them.

Thankfully there are many ways we can get in to the habit of becoming and staying mentally active.

In later life, the most beneficial activity we can take part in is to do something we have never done before, which individually could encompass anything from knitting to cooking, learning a new language or acquiring digital skills – opening up a whole world of opportunities.

However, we know that getting online can be a daunting prospect for many - over two thirds of all digital exclusion is amongst those aged 65 and over.

Here at Age UK South Lakeland we are available to provide support every step of the way to enable older people to get online safely and confidently.

We also offer free loans of equipment and internet connections, so you can try before you buy a device of your own.

We urge everyone to give digital a go – it may just be the best decision you make. Call on 030 300 30003 for more information.
