A South Lakes charity has put the village it serves firmly on the map.

Cartmel Village Society (CVS) has invested in a new visitors map to highlight the gems of the picturesque village of Cartmel.

The charity has invested more than £100,000 in village projects in the last 10 years.

The map and a new community website, Cartmel.org, are the latest projects helping to promote the area with visitors and tourists.

It features local landmarks, place to stay and places to eat and visit.

David Crabtree, chair of Cartmel Village Society, said: “We’re sure many people don’t realise how much the charity has given back to good causes in and around Cartmel Village in recent years or indeed whether they might be eligible for support themselves.”

Previous donations from the charity have included an estimated £20,000 to Cartmel Primary School and support towards the Christmas in Cartmel traders event.

Funds have also aided with the ‘Festival of Angels’ and ‘Windows on the World’ at the 800-year old Cartmel Priory, as well as improving seating, signage, and toilets in the village.

Donations will soon go towards improvements to the children’s playground and funding a defibrillator at Unsworth’s Yard in the very heart of Cartmel village.

Local businesses and community groups have been encouraged to visit the new website for details on how to apply for future project funding or to find out what help and advice CVS might be able to offer if a project does not meet the criteria.

Cartmel Village Society was founded in 1993 and works to protect Cartmel’s past, present and future.

Mr Crabtree said: “As well as preserving the past, CVS’s aim is to make sure we continue to invest in the future of the village, “ said Mr Crabtree.

“Whether that’s helping schools purchase important equipment or boosting the economy of the village and driving footfall to local businesses by putting money into specific events and celebrations.

“Of course we would love to have a bottomless pot of money, but we need to carefully manage what we have to ensure the CVS legacy remains in place.”
