THE legacy of a much-loved son who tragically died after falling down the stairs is still living on a year on from the tragedy.

Friends and family members of 23-year-old shipyard worker Michael Tracey have spoken of the ‘love’ and ‘heartbreak’ 12 months since the incident.

Mr Tracey was on a works night out in Ambleside when he fell down the stairs and suffered a neck injury.

Paramedics and police attended the scene where they managed to restart Michael’s heart after he suffered a cardiac arrest. He was taken to Preston Royal Hospital by helicopter where he later died.

A year on from his death, Mr Tracey, who grew up in Ulverston but moved to Howe Street in Barrow three years ago, has been remembered by his friends as a ‘happy-go-lucky character’ who has left ‘a huge hole in all their lives’.

His mother, Sarah Sanders, said: “A year has passed really quickly. It’s been a strange year for all of us with lockdown. We have so many happy memories of the six of us as such a happy family.

“We are so proud of the memories that everyone who knew Mick have of him. He was such a kind, generous and happy person with so many friends

“It’s so lovely that his friends pay such heartfelt tributes on the anniversary of his passing His friends met up on his birthday last year (September 19) and planned to do so every year.

“This year will be difficult due to Covid restrictions. Mick will always be sorely missed by so many people. He’s left a gaping hole in our lives.

“He was a really good man taken too soon.”

Childhood friend Jesse Powell said: “One year since we lost the main man, although I feel his love for life still lives through me in many ways.

“I wish I had told Tracey the love and appreciation I had for him so much more while I had the chance, learn from me don’t hold back on telling your friends how much they mean to you because you never know when you will see them again. And don’t fear growing older because it is a privilege denied to many, so be grateful for each day you wake up."

Friend Jessie Wilson also added: “One full year since you left the biggest hole in all our hearts, not a moment goes by that I don’t think of you and wish you were still here, love and miss you every day, see you again on the other side of the stars.”
