Pubs and bars across Cumbria and beyond will be told to close from 10pm amid rising Covid-19 cases.
The measures are set to be announced by the Prime Minister today in a bid to control the spread of the virus, following yesterday's warning from chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty that coronavirus cases are now rapidly increasing.
Professor Whitty and chief scientific advisor Sir Patrick Vallance warned that by mid-November, 200 people could be dying each day if urgent action is not taken.
Mr Johnson will today hold meetings of Cabinet and the Cobra emergency committee.
He is to conduct a televised address to the nation at 8pm this evening.
A Number 10 spokesperson said: "No-one underestimates the challenges the new measures will pose to many individuals and businesses.
"We know this won't be easy, but we must take further action to control the resurgence in cases of the virus and protect the NHS."
