CHEAPER parking in a south Cumbria town has been celebrated by a councillor in the region citing the hard economic times residents and visitors are facing.

Liberal Democrat councillor for Low Furness Janet Willis has welcomed the introduction of cheaper parking at the Buxton Place car park in Ulverston.

The changes – which were led and funded by Ulverston BID - saw prices slashed from £1.20 for an hour down to 50p, and from £2.20 for two hours down to £1.00.

Cllr Willis, who instigated the reduced 20p per hour charge in Stockbridge Lane, said: “Times are tough for many people so it’s right that as councillors we work with organisations like Ulverston BID to look into every possible way to help local residents.

“As we slowly come out of lockdown, we also want to be able to encourage more shoppers back into the town centre to support local jobs and businesses and hopefully this reduction in parking is one way to help to do that.”
