A UNIVERSITY student on placement at Great Western Hospital has died.

A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “At around 10pm on Sunday evening,  we were called to the sudden death of a man in his 20s at the staff accommodation block at Great Western Hospital.

“His death is not being treated as suspicious and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.

“A file is now being prepared for HM Coroner.”

Matthew Ward was at the hospital as part of the third year of his University of Bristol medicine degree.

A spokesperson for the university said that students are being offered support and added: “We are very sorry to confirm that Matthew Ward, one of our third-year undergraduate medical students who was on placement in Swindon, sadly died on Sunday evening.

“This news is extremely upsetting, and our thoughts are with Matthew’s family and friends. We would ask that his family’s privacy is respected at this difficult time.

“We have contacted fellow medical students and are reminding members of the university community that they can request support should they need it by contacting our wellbeing team.”

Dr Charlotte Forsyth, medical director at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Matthew was a popular student who had been on an undergraduate placement at the hospital since last month.

“Our thoughts are with Matthew’s family, fellow students and the colleagues at the hospital who he spent time working alongside and learning from. We have spoken to other students based here and have offered them our ongoing support at this really difficult time.”
