CLIMBING enthusiasts have been practising their skills in Ulverston since the opening of the town's first climbing wall.

The Wall in Quebec Street in Ulverston has received rave reviews since officially opening its doors.

Plans for the bouldering-only climbing facility were first submitted to South Lakeland District Council in November last year by climbing enthusiast Joe Holden.

Mr Holden, who left his job at a law firm in Sheffield to purely focus on his new venture, saw a demand for a climbing wall which catered for all age groups and abilities in Ulverston.

After months of construction and renovation work, The Wall is currently open to experienced climbers and will extend its opening to novice climbers this weekend.

Mr Holden said: “Seeing my vision realised is a really special feeling and I want to keep working hard and earning good reviews from people.

“I love climbing and know what a valuable space a community a climbing wall can be.

“It’s all been good reviews so far - we want people’s feedback to make The Wall a space the community want to use.”

Mr Holden staggered the opening of The Wall depending on customers’ climbing ability.

He said: “We’ve had people coming in who knew climbing already so we could purely focus on getting the Covid guidelines right.

“We’re doing all we can to help limit spread of the virus but at the same time people need to stay fit and healthy and live their lives.

“But this weekend we’re opening to novices which we’re excited about.

“We’re focussing on building a good community of climbers and getting them happy with the space and climbing.

“We want to introduce more and more people to the sport.

“We’ve had a lot of interest on social media asking when the wall is open to novices so we’re looking forward to giving people the opportunity to try out the sport.”
