Ambleside

THROUGHOUT lockdown until Friday December 4, Ambleside Parish Centre will open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 9-1pm.

The Fareshare food table is also open Tues-Thurs, 9.15-10am and for hot lunches from 12-2pm.

The Food Bank opens on Wednesdays, 9.15-11am.

‘Bags for Life’ carriers and volunteer drivers are needed to distribute hot meals from the Parish Centre, starting from next Tuesday November 17.

Spare bags can be dropped into the Centre foyer, at the front of the big white foodbank donations’ box.

The Centre’s hot lunches are provided in conjunction with Windermere School, from Tuesdays-Thursdays, with delivery available locally.

There is a 3-week rolling menu at £4.50 per meal for those who can afford them, and free to those whose income has been affected by Covid-19. Contact Revd Jane Nattrass on 015394 34172 or email admin@amblesidepc.org.uk

AMBLESIDE’S Parish Centre Bereavement Group is meeting weekly during lockdown instead of monthly, to help those in the community particularly affected by loss and bereavement in these difficult times.

Informal drop-ins are every Thursday at the Parish Centre, 2.30-4pm, socially distanced and with face masks

DURING lockdown, Ambleside Post Office and The Crux opens Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 9-12pm and Windermere Post Office from 9-5.30pm daily, Mon-Sat.

THERE were no cases of Covid on the Ambleside campus last week, and blended student learning is continuing as planned, including face-to-face teaching where it can be done safely.

Some subjects also require risk-assessed outdoor studies or fieldwork sessions, to be led by staff in small groups, pairs or independently.

LOCKDOWN has forced Lakes Parish Council to cancel its Finance Committee meeting planned for November 16 and the full Council meeting on November 23.

It is hoped to hold a full Hybrid Council Meeting at 6pm on Monday December 14, subject to any change in the end of lockdown on December 2.

Meanwhile, Parish Clerk Michael Johnson is working from home but will be at the Parish Council office each Monday to deal with essential business and Finance Officer Suzanne Pender will also be working there at various times.

Michael Johnson can be contacted by email, lakesparishclerk@yahoo.co.uk or ring 015394 31656.

AMBLESIDE Allotments Association experienced a flood of interest during lockdown from people wanting to grow their own produce.

For the first time, all of its 18 plots were cultivated, including two new areas introduced to try and meet some of the demand, members learned at the Association’s Zoom AGM. After cancellation of the Horticultural Society’s Summer Show, members held a "virtual show" instead, which was judged to be such a success that it will be repeated next year. Most importantly of all, plot-holders have reported many successful crops, despite a series of weather-related challenges.

The "Most Interesting Plot" trophy was awarded to Harry Shuell and Lucy Finch.

ON SUNDAY November 1, a group of volunteers led by Ambleside Community Christmas Lights Chairman Richard Attenborough made a good start on putting up the festive lights in Ambleside’s streets, with most of Compston Road and all of North Road and The Slack completed, despite atrocious weather.

However, plans to finish the task last Sunday were put on hold by the new lockdown.

The sections already installed will be connected and gradually switched on in the coming days to help the town look a little less dark on winter nights, but the remaining lights for Lake Road and Church Street and the artificial trees in Market Place will have to wait a while. However, the good news is that the permanently fixed LED lights around Market Place and above the shops opposite Market Cross should be switched on in the coming days.

The volunteers would like to thank those businesses who offered and provided hot drinks on the first session, and there many appreciative expressions of thanks from passers-by and thumbs up signs from passing motorists. The plan is to leave the lights on throughout January.

Endmoor

SAINT Patrick’s Churchyard has been tended and tidied and now looks beautiful.  The DCC of the Church are very grateful to those who have worked so hard to achieve this.

PUBLIC footpaths across the Fellside Manor development to the north of the village will have slight diversions according to plans outlined by Town and Country Planning. Subject to consultation, the footpaths will follow similar routes and be a minimum of 2 metres wide.

STAR of the Week certificates at St Patrick’s CE School were awarded to Evelyn Mason for super effort in all that she does, Kitty Lavender for trying really hard in maths, and Edmundo Dos Santos for a great contribution in all lessons.

NOT able to use the church because of lockdown, and on a cold windy November Sunday, a very moving Remembrance Service was conducted by Reverend Martin Dew at St Patrick's Church.  Wreaths were laid by Bertha Hayhurst of Preston Richard Parish, Susan Sanderson of Preston Patrick Parish, and Valerie Kos for the church.

Warden Tony Mason read out the fallen for WW I and II in both Parishes served by the church.

The service continued with two minutes silence and reverent thoughts for the fallen.  It was a tribute to how people throughout the land respond to important issues.

Grasmere

REMEMBRANCE Sunday was marked with a service organised by RAOB Lion & Lamb (Buffs) at the war memorial in Broadgate Meadow.

At the moving service, sixty local people respected social distancing, heads bowed, as they listened to Binyon's poem For the Fallen.

Grasmere primary school pupil Jake Leech Sanders then played the Last Post and Reveille marking the beginning and end of  the two minutes' silence; and representatives of St Oswald's Church, the Village Society and the Parish Council laid wreaths at the foot of the Celtic cross.

Rev'd David Wilmot's Act of Remembrance posted on the Community Hub Facebook page pays tribute to the 27 people whose names are listed on the memorial and in church.
