Natland & Oxenholme
REVEREND Craig Bentley should have completed his 500 climbs of St Mark’s church tower to a height exceeding that of Everest.
Regrettably, lockdown 2 brought all plans to an abrupt halt, leaving Craig still at base camp.
Despite the postponement of the climb donations already exceed £1,400 to be shared between St Mark’s and the International Nepal fellowship.
Craig is determined to complete the challenge and has set a new date of 18 January 2021 to start his ascent.
New and Old Hutton
AT THE primary school, Class 4 have been studying why we wear Poppies as part of Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day.
They thanked the British Legion, and other smaller charities, for all their service towards raising awareness for the British Armed Forces and other military personnel.
They also learned that some people choose to wear a purple poppy to remember service animals, a very popular symbol because they are a class full of animal-lovers.
THE CLASS 4 Collective Worship Leaders hosted a special Remembrance service in their bubble.
The House Captains read “In Flanders Fields” as part of the service.
They listened to a recording of Mrs Sampson playing The Last Post on Google Classroom. Class 3 held their own Remembrance service.
They had made poppy crosses in Forest Schools and then completed their beautiful poppy sketches.
ON CHILDREN in Need day there were so many super happy sporty, spotty Pudsey-lookalike pupils in school.
The focus was on both fundraising for Children In Need and on being extra-active (with a little help from Joe Wicks!). Many thanks to everyone for donating and for joining in with such colourful enthusiasm, and also to the School Council for getting everyone organised!
ON NOVEMBER 10, the WI held their Annual Meeting by Zoom, with fourteen ladies present, just over half the membership. Plans for the future have many uncertainties. Nevertheless, a programme is being made with hopes that it will all go ahead. President for the year will be Margaret Sproat and Secretary Ruth Rigg.
The next meeting is on December 8, when there will be a speaker on Zoom talking about nutrition. Anyone who would like to join the meeting should contact Ruth Rigg on 722896.
RESIDENTS of both parishes are encouraged to comment on the proposal to establish a new unitary authority based on either the existing Cumbria County Council or a new Morecambe Bay authority covering the Barrow, South Lakeland District Council and Lancaster areas. At the moment our local government services are split between CCC and SLDC and a unitary authority would save a great deal of money.
An online questionnaire is available at https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/JYMB9DH, but as the two parish councils are unaware of residents’ wishes, respondents should also let the Parish Clerk know their preference by tomorrow, Friday November 20, as the government has set a tight deadline.
GOSPEL readings for the month of November and a short order of prayer can be found on the church page of each parish’s website.

Milnthorpe
PARISH Councillors heard that the authority has been granted two amounts of money from the Leasgill Quarry Fund. £500 will be for the new bench on Grisleymires Lane and £1,000 for the Laking Steps.
The Council expressed its appreciation for this funding.
It is also seeking help from Baywind Energy Community Trust and Electricity Northwest towards the lighting scheme on the Square.
A plaque is to be placed on the wall of the Pony Field to commemorate Polly the pony who was resident there for many years. 39 Christmas trees have been purchased and will be distributed. Switch on date is Friday November 27.
Underbarrow
THERE will be a meeting of Underbarrow & Bradleyfield Parish Council to be held by Zoom on Wednesday November 18, 2020 at 7pm.
The Agenda and documents for the meeting will be on the village website at http://www.underbarrowparishcouncil.co.uk, and on the notice board outside the Institute.

IN THIS second lockdown please feel free to ask for any help that you may need from the Underbarrow Isolation Support Group. Jennie Richardson and Louise Ellis are more than happy to resume their shopping service and all the other services that we provided during the first lockdown.
