A NEW website has been launched to celebrate the 50th anniversary of when Alfred Wainwright finished his famous series of pictorial guides to the Lakeland Fells.
On the website, you can compare what Wainwright saw with what is to be seen today, and also learn more about the historical associations of these places.
The website is the creation of a local enthusiast, Richard Daly, who has spent eight years tracking down all of Wainwright’s viewpoints, taking photographs, and organising the whole project so that others can enjoy it.
The retired lawyer from Sandside near Milnthorpe, said: “This has been a labour of love for me. I think that the five Lakeland Sketchbooks are Wainwright’s greatest artistic work, and it has been fascinating to learn more about how he chose his viewpoints, and achieved the effects he did, with just a nibbed pen and black ink.
"AW’s drawings were so accurate that it is possible to see how places have changed, or stayed the same down the years."
Wainwright's five Lakeland sketchbooks, containing no fewer than 400 pen and ink drawings of the fells, valleys, buildings and landmarks of the Lake District were published between 1968 and 1973.
"I just hope that now other people will enjoy exploring this aspect of Wainwright’s Lakeland through my website," concluded the 63-year-old.
