CUMBRIA Police have issued guidance as to what is deemed local after questions over where people can go for exercise arose.

They advised that people stay in the village, town, or part of the city that they live.

A spokesman for Cumbria Constabulary said: “The regulations state that you must stay at home unless you have a reasonable excuse to leave. Exercise is classed as a reasonable excuse to be outside your home.

“There is no law defining the distance you can travel.

“The guidance says that you should stay local when you exercise and that local should be your own village, town, or part of the city where you live.

“In order to access open spaces you can travel a short distance in your local area.”

Questions from readers following Newsquest Cumbria’s report on lockdown breaches that police dealt with last weekend allured to not knowing the rules regarding where you can go to exercise.

A National Police Chiefs’ Council spokesman said: “UK Government guidance strongly requests that people do not leave their local area. However, the Covid regulations which officers enforce and which enables them to issue FPNs for breaches, do not restrict the distance travelled for exercise.

“Police officers will be inquisitive about why people are out of their homes and will explain the regulations and encourage people to comply.

“Where people are breaching the regulations and are away from home without a reasonable excuse, they may be issued with a FPN.

“Those who do not follow the regulations in place should expect to receive a fixed penalty notice.”
