A Kendal golf player has been selected by England Golf’s women’s squad for the 2021 season.

18-year-old Caitlin Whitehead was called up to the women’s squad in last week’s announcement.

Caitlin, who is a member of Carus Green Golf Club in Kendal, was part of the 2020 girls’ squad, but has now made the step up to the women’s squad.

She commented: “I am thrilled to be part of the England women’s squad.

“It feels great to have moved up from the girls’ team to further progress my golf game.”

The youngster has been training with the women’s squad since September ahead of the 2021 season.

Caitlin hopes that her season can start in March, but accepted that it may be delayed by Covid-19.

The key events in the season for Caitlin and the women’s squad are the European Ladies’ Team Championship and the Home Internationals.

Having started the sport as a young child, Caitlin has credited Carus Green in her development.

Caitlin said: ’I have been playing golf from around the age of four and I started playing competitively around the age of 12, playing in county comps and some national events.

“I have then just continued and progressed with these events.

“My home course is Carus Green in Cumbria, I spend a great deal of my time practicing at Carus, using their great facilities, which has really helped me improve and develop as a golfer. “

Rosie Wadmore from Cumbria County Ladies Golf Association has congratulated Caitlin after her call-up.

She said: “The county has loved watching Caitlin’s golfing career progress from a young age, through Club, Northern Juniors, Junior and County Squad, E.G Girl’s Squad to being named in E.G. Women’s Squad for the 2021 season.

“What an amazing achievement by her and so well deserved; this wouldn’t have been possible without the continued support of her family and we thank them for helping her reach her dream.”

Caitlin, a former pupil at Kirkbie Kendal School, will be leaving Cumbria to study at the University of Arizona later this year, where she hopes she can further her golf career.
