Lack of affordable homes and pressure on a local school will be among the issues considered when plans to build 157 new homes go before South Lakeland District Council (SLDC)'s planners today.

The council's planning officers have recommended approval for the plans, subject to a Section 106 agreement related to affordable housing, off-site recreational space and off-site drainage.

Kendal Town Council has objected to the development on land north of Laurel Gardens on the grounds that the developer is not providing 35 per cent affordable housing or two or three self-build plots.

The development of the site is subject to existing constraints, including sloping levels, rocky outcrops and surface water drainage.

However, Cumbria County Council's highways department, along with the Environment Agency and United Utilities, all say they are satisfied with drainage plans, road surface spray and biodiversity.

The town council's planning committee would like to see a path from Burneside Road over the bridge to Hallgarth resurfaced as a cycle path by Kendal-based developer Russell Armer Ltd.

The planning meeting will also address concerns regarding the impact the development would potentially have on the number of children attending St Oswald's Primary School.
