A BREWERY has confirmed it is planning on resubmitting an application to build on the car park of a Kendal pub.

Last year Punch Partnership Limited submitted a planning application to South Lakeland District Council to build a Co-op on the car park of the Duke of Cumberland on Appleby Road.

The application caused huge anger in the community, resulting in over 400 residents registering their objections to the plans and the application subsequently being withdrawn.

Town councillors were also concerned by the proposals and said the development would add traffic congestion to the area and would be ‘detrimental’ to local businesses.

The company has now said it is planning to resubmit the application.

Operations Director Mandy Southall said: “We can confirm that Punch are intending to submit a planning application for the future development for a section of the carpark to the rear of the Duke of Cumberland pub in Kendal.

“The Duke of Cumberland remains an important part of the Punch portfolio and we are confident that the development will be a positive addition to the community.”

Josh Macaulay, who runs the Duke of Cumberland on Appleby Road with business partner Chris Moss, said: “They knew that it was going to be rejected.

“They withdrew it and are amending it to address the concerns raised.”

Mr Macaulay recently revealed a string of exciting plans the business duo would like to carry out on the pub, including an outdoor children’s play area and a stage to host mini festivals.
