Almost a third of the crimes reported in South Lakes last year were classed as ‘violent and sexual offences’.

Despite lockdown rules being in place for most of the year, data from Cumbria Constabulary has revealed that 6,768 crimes were reported in the area in 2020.

The most common offence by far with 2,225 reports were violent and sexual offences.

However, anti-social behaviour reports were also high with 1,944 reports being made.

There were also 585 criminal damage and arson reports made and 523 public order offences reported.

Reports relating to theft and burglary were among the lowest types of crime reported last year.

Twelve ‘theft from person’ and robbery reports were made.

Bicycle theft reports were also relatively low at 31.

According to the data, Allhallows Lane in Kendal stood out with 103 crime reports made.

The most reported crimes on this street related to anti-social behaviour offences 39. However, violence and sexual offences were also high with 25 reports. Longpool also saw a lot of crime reports with 56.

Four per cent of all of the reports are currently awaiting a court outcome and in 19 per cent of cases, no suspect has ever been identified.

A further 289 reports are still under investigation and in 1,862 reports police have been unable to prosecute a suspect.
