HERE are the latest announcements from our community news correspondent Kathryn Smith for Burton-in-Kendal.

There were no announcements from the chairman at the February parish council meeting, but the clerk reported in response to queries about the future role of the butchers shop she could find no evidence through SLDC of an application to convert it to a Chinese takeaway.

The planning application for Fern Bank met with no objections but the council would comment that this, and all applications for an extra dwelling, should make provision for at least one parking space.

Following the resignation of Jane Hague, the council now has eight councillors.

Given the imminence of council elections in May, it was agreed not to seek to fill the casual vacancy at this time.

The Forestry Commission has a wooden barrier to replace the missing height barrier at Plain Quarry and the council therefore decided to save money and not to proceed with a replacement metal barrier.

The plans submitted by the developer for alterations at the Boon Town playground met with the parish councils’ proposals decided at the last meeting and were therefore approved.

This included only one entrance to the playground and provision of equipment including an extra swing.

There was still outstanding remedial work to be completed in The Square.

This mainly comprised flooding on the cobbles and other issues associated with drains, culverts, and surfaces.

Work was planned to affect these deficiencies, and this might again involve traffic control through the centre of village.

Whilst much of this work was the responsibility of the county council, the £5000 final payment for the PSiCA would be delayed until a satisfactory outcome was achieved.

All other items on the Action Plan were proceeding, albeit slowly for various reasons, but would continue to be followed up by various councillors.

The B4RN project had restarted and the sign up for the west side was now in the mid 20% but 30% was needed.

It is therefore essential that more residents sign up for this facility.

Cllr Isherwood agreed to research the provision of charge points and Cllr Nolan would continue his quest to find extra parking spaces in the village.

The next meeting would be on Thursday 18th March.
