Noise and parking concerns have been raised over a rugby club's plans to allow seasonal camping on its site.

Kendal Rugby Club has submitted plans to South Lakeland District Council for camping to diversify income streams, welcoming campers between May 1 and October 1.

The proposals were discussed by Kendal Town Council's planning committee at a meeting on Monday night.

Councillor Jonathon Cornthwaite, who represents Mintfeet, asked whether noise levels had been studied.

He said: “If there were 10 or 20 pitches with dogs and pets then there will be noise.

"Has the noise survey from 2015 been checked?"

Councillor Helen Ladhams, who represents Nether, was also concerned about parking.

Hunters Croft resident John Whitfield said: "I am concerned regarding the noise that will be generated at night from the campsite.

"The croft has many families with small children who would suffer disturbance from late night noise.

"A stipulation needs to be made that there is no noise after 10pm.

"Parking maybe an issue should the site become very busy.

"There have been issues in the past with unwanted parking in the croft by people attending the rugby club."

A spokesman for Kendal Rugby Club said. “We have done camping with guidelines in place.

“Everything is well maintained and facilities are ideal.

"For security, people can’t just get in and out of the clubhouse without a fob.

“There will be the same access rules that members use and campers can have a meal and use the bar and takeaway hatch after hours.

“The campers will have to pay a £5 deposit to allow access to the toilets at night.

"The rest of the building will be locked.

"No spotlights will be used any circumstances."

The district council is set to consider the application from the rugby club at its next planning meeting on March 25.
