A ZERO-WASTE shop in Kendal has quadrupled in size and can now admit customers again after moving into new premises.

Another Weigh began trading in Wainwright's Yard on Tuesday after leaving its previous Blackhall Yard home at the weekend.

The shop works on the premise that customers bring their own jars and plastic containers and fill them with foodstuffs, cleaning supplies and more, removing the need for packaging.

The business also boasts a large range of organic produce and ensures its products are fair trade where possible.

Zoe Hedges, co-owner of Another Weigh, believes the public has become 'more aware in the last few years that we need to do something about our packaging issue'.

“We’re very well supported," she said.

"Customers really appreciate the effort we go to to ensure the products we offer are as ethical as they can be.

“I do think that the customers in Kendal are very environmentally conscious.

"We’re lucky in Cumbria that we’ve got such beautiful surroundings that continually remind us we need to be looking after the environment.”

She said there was now an 'urgency at government level right through to grassroots level' that changes needed to be made in the public's consumption habits.

Another Weigh's new, bigger site - formerly occupied by delicatessen and café Pomegranate and Sage - will allow the business to offer a wider range of products and ensure the public can once again browse inside the store.

At Blackhall Yard, the store was restricted to door service and deliveries to shielding members of the public owing to coronavirus restrictions and the size of the premises.

Another Weigh opened in Kendal in December 2019. A store in Penrith had opened the previous January and has also since moved into a bigger home.

The business is owned by Miss Hedges and husband and wife Chris and Emma Bray.

An educational charity - founded by Mr and Mrs Bray's daughter Amy and named 'Another Way' - is supported by profits from Another Weigh.
