A DETERMINED three-year-old is completing a month-long fundraiser in memory of his late great-grandfather.

Bobby Bolton, from Carnforth, is eating up the miles to reach 40 before he is four to raise money for the Huggett Suite at Royal Lancaster Infirmary, who looked after his great-grandad Colin before he died almost a year ago after suffering from a stroke.

“His great grandfather died last year during the pandemic and he was incredibly close with him,” said Bobby’s mum, Florence Greenwood.

“He’d ask about his grandad a lot and around the time we would go out and do clap for carers I would say we are clapping for the people who looked after grandad as well.

“He would ask about the nurses and he was very interested to know who was looking after him.

“We thought it would be a really positive thing to get the whole family involved and raise a bit of money.”

Bobby, alongside his little sister Nancy, parents Florence Greenwood and Jack Bolton, as well as dog Bert, have been walking, running and cycling each day since March 20 to raise funds before his birthday on April 21.

The youngster was inspired by his uncle, who regularly raises money for causes, and was eager to help families communicate with their loved ones while in the ward.

“I asked if he wanted to raise money for the nurses who looked after grandad,” said Ms Greenwood.

“And to help make the facilities a bit better. I gave the example that we could speak to grandad on an iPad. We had to take the iPad in ourselves and it was a bit of a struggle.

“He said he would like to give the ward an iPad so it would be easier for families to communicate.”

Bobby has already smashed his £200 target, nearing almost £1,000.

“Bobby has been absolutely delighted. He’s really proud of himself as he’d just learnt how to ride his big boy bike the Tuesday before the first day of the challenge on the Saturday,” said Ms Greenwood.

“He was cycling along, and he said, ‘I’m doing this for grandad I’m not going to stop I want to make him proud’.”
