The candidates for the upcoming local council elections have been confirmed ahead of the public going to the polls next month.

There are vacancies on South Lakeland District Council for the Furness Peninsula, Broughton and Coniston and Grange and Kendal Rural wards to be filled.

Cumbria County Council has an empty seat in Ulverston West, with a by-election to be held, while there will also be elections for parish and town councils.

The last chance to register to vote will be at 11.59pm on April 19 ahead of the elections on May 6.

For the Broughton and Coniston ward on the district council, the candidates will be Conservative Matt Brereton , Labour’s Paul Martin, Liberal Democrat Heather Troughton and the Green Party’s Lynette Gilligan.

Furness Peninsula will be contested by Ben Thomas Cooper (Conservative), Sharon Webster (Labour), Loraine Birchall (Liberal Democrat) and Peter Alan (Green).

For Grange, the candidates will be Conservative Aron Taylor, Labour’s Ben Barker, Liberal Democrat Pete Endsor and the Green Party’s Robin Le Mare.

And Luke Gudgeon (Conservative), Hanna Burke (Labour), Ali Jama (Liberal Democrat) and Frances Richardson (Green) are in the running for the Kendal Rural ward.

In the county council by-election for the Ulverston West electoral division Loraine Birchall will again be on the ballot paper, while the other candidates will be Andrew Butcher (Conservative), David Webster (Labour) and Judy Filmore (Green).

Crosthwaite and Lyth parish council will also hold a by-election, and all wards of Ulverston Town Council are being contested.

All other parishes are not being contested as the number of nominations did not exceed the number of places available and so those candidates nominated are automatically elected unopposed.

The local elections will be different from previous occasions, with the imminent announcement of the reorganisation of local government.

This means a full set of county and district elections will take place next year instead.
