HERE are the latest announcements from our community news correspondents Kathryn Smith and Jay Barkley for Burton in Kendal.

AT the annual parish meeting the chairman, Cllr Wren thanked all members of the council, the clerk Christine Davidson and press desk for their support and work throughout the year.

He also announced that following resignations, two new Cllrs, Jane Hague and Lesley Bailey had been co-opted during the year.

However, with the subsequent resignation of Jane Hague for personal reasons, there was now a vacancy on the council.

All nine seats on the council will be contested at the local elections due to be held on 6th May, if enough applications are received to warrant an election.

Cllr Wren gave a brief synopsis of the year's work and noted with regret that the council had received very few police reports during the year.

He also gave an update on the work in The Square and that when this is finally completed two cast iron benches will be installed.

He thanked Lesley Bailey and Christine Davidson for running the village Community Group during the COVID period and congratulated Lesley on her award from The High Sheriff in recognition of this work.

BURTON Sports and Recreation Trust Committee members report that, during the closure of MUGA (multi-use-games area) a number of jobs have been completed including attention to the surface area, new LED floodlights installed, hedges laid, a general tidy round, a deep clean everyone looks forward to opening the gates.

There are plans to improve the facility and bowling green area to become part of the village for all to enjoy, the committee invites suggestions and ideas from residents for other uses for the MUGA.

Plans are already in hand to start weekly football sessions for teenagers, a resumption of Boot Camp and family events all suggestions gratefully received.

Other plans taking shape include getting back to favourite events: Big Kids Day Out, Bingo sessions, Halloween Trail, children’s Christmas parties as and when restrictions allow. Plus, the Burton 10km run is pencilled -in for Sunday September 28th with something for non- runners and younger members of the village.

Nicola Stephens has taken on the role of Chair with Stuart Aston Vice Chair.

BURTON Memorial Hall Management Chair Anne Nichols reports that, it is uncertain as to when exactly the Hall will be allowed to re-open and which activities can take place.

The time- scales issued by government are subject to change but, the latest ruling is the Hall will not re-open prior to May 17th.

PARISH Councillor Chris Nolan proposed the possibility of opening a monthly out -door market in the Square, to sell fresh fruit, vegetables, and other local products.

Fellow councillors supported the proposal which will be formally presented at a future meeting.

The lengthy conservation work in the Square is ongoing whilst temporary traffic lights remain in place.
