RUSKINS View in Kirkby Lonsdale had two of its bins thrown over the railings which overlooked the iconic beauty spot.

The bins had been torn from their foundations and cast down the hill from the path way overlooking the landscape view, which was named after 19th century poet John Ruskin.

Images of the vandalism circulated online and triggered outrage from the local community.

One of the bins had rolled half way down the hill, while the other had been thrown further.

Deputy chairman of Kirkby Lonsdale Town Council, Alan Muirhead, described the act as 'mindless’.

He said: "We’re understandably angry, but also extremely saddened that we've been subjected to such mindless vandalism.

"We’ve been looking forward to welcoming visitors when lockdown restrictions ease.

"Whoever did this, whether local or from away, should be ashamed.

"Ruskin’s View is internationally acknowledged as something special and for anyone to desecrate the area in this way is shocking.

"If the culprits are ever apprehended, the courts should make them do community work here to make good their vandalism."

Janis Stephenson posted images of the bins online and described her shock at the disrespect the act projected toward the town.

She said: "I don’t know who did this. We have some very respectful youngsters in Kirkby and it dismays me to think that someone could do this at one of our famous views.

"We have had a fantastic community spirit in Kirkby Lonsdale during this pandemic. What a shame someone has to do this."
