Kendal’s night-time economy looks set to grow with a new café and hot food takeaway.

Plans to convert a former barbershop in Finkle Street have been approved by South Lakeland District Council.

Veysullah Bagis applied to the council to open the food outlet for 14 hours a day, from 11am until 1am the following day, with an extra hour on Sundays and public holidays.

A decision on the plans was delegated to council planning officers, who approved the proposals.

The approval was subject to conditions including that a maintenance schedule for the extraction and treatment of fumes and odours generated from cooking shall be regularly submitted and approved in writing.

Another condition said the business should only operate between 8am and 11pm from Monday to Saturday, as well as on Sundays and public holidays.

A council report on the plans said: "The proposal is not considered to result in an overprovision of one specific use within the area and is considered to contribute to the diversity of uses along this area of the town centre."

Kendal Town Council had reviewed the plans but were worried about the extra litter that may come of the development.

The council said: “We propose a waste management condition.

“The applicant should both provide and empty the rubbish outside the premises, specifically given its location.

“The committee object to such extended hours as proposed, given the location and potential for lack of public order in the Kendal conservation area in the town centre at the requested opening times.

“However, conditions should be put onto the application regarding the noise and smell of the extraction duct, which must conform to our policy in what is a mixed residential and retail area.

"Also, to ensure that pedestrian movement past the shop and the waiting for service in its pavement vicinity is not an issue."

Councillor Doug Rathbone said: “It is good that SLDC planning took account of the town council committee’s requests to reduce the opening hours requested and for suitable waste management and we hope this would include the public rubbish created.

"Apart from that there couldn’t be any different planning decision under the current planning process.”
