A CUMBRIAN business has been recognised for its innovation with a prestigious award.

Appleby-based Barrnon has been given a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the innovation section of the 2021 awards.

Established in 2007, Barrnon is an engineering services provider and the Queen’s Award for Enterprise recognised the company’s success at identifying an opportunity to develop specialist equipment for the decommissioning of nuclear sites.

The Queen’s Awards for Enterprise are the UK’s most prestigious business awards, offering recipients global recognition that their company is outstanding in its field.

The awards are valid for five years and the winners will be invited to a royal reception, presented with the award at their company by the Lord-Lieutenant, are able to fly The Queen’s Awards flag at their main office, and use the emblem on their marketing materials and given a Grant of Appointment (an official certificate) and a commemorative crystal trophy.

HM Lord-Lieutenant of Cumbria, Mrs Claire Hensman, said: “It’s wonderful that Barrnon has once again showcased the excellence that exists in Cumbria by being awarded this prestigious national award.

“I am keen to demonstrate that here in Cumbria we have many innovative and enterprising companies. National recognition of our businesses would be good for the county’s economy, particularly as we look to recover from the significant impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the business community.

“The last twelve months have been tough for many of our businesses and people, given the challenges presented by the pandemic. Despite these challenges our businesses have demonstrated remarkable resilience and are looking forward to the future.”

Cumbria LEP chief executive, Jo Lappin, added: “Cumbria has many ambitious and innovative businesses, which have demonstrated incredible resilience, creativity and adaptability, over the past year.
