A MAN in his 20s ‘jumped’ from a bridge in Ambleside and broke his ankle over bank holiday weekend, rescuers have said.

Police, fire crews, the ambulance service and mountain rescue all attended Rydal Road on Sunday night.

The casualty had dropped from a height of around four metres into Stock Beck.

Langdale/Ambleside Mountain Rescue Team, which attended the incident, said the man jumped from the bridge.

Ambleside resident Louise Wilkinson, who lives near to the accident location, was in bed when she noticed the flashing lights of emergency vehicles outside her window.

She said: “There’d already been quite a lot of rowdy youths going up and down the town. Shouting, swearing, a lot of noise.

“There were quite a lot of people roaming the streets who’d probably had a few too many beverages, in a nutshell.”

Mrs Wilkinson, who moved to Ambleside from Kendal in January, said: “It just surprised me that in an area like Ambleside that kind of behaviour goes on really.”

A report from another member of the public said the casualty had fallen onto rocks next to the river and was stretchered out.

A spokesman for Cumbria Constabulary said: “Police were contacted at 9.14pm on May 2 to a report of a concern for welfare at Rydal Road, Ambleside.

“The incident involved a man in his 20s, who sustained injuries to his ankle.”

A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said crews from Ambleside, Kendal and Windermere attended the incident.

He said: “Crews administered first aid and used a ladder and lighting equipment at the incident.

“The casualty was left in the care of the mountain rescue team.

“Crews were at the scene for 45 minutes.”
