A CUMBRIA County Councillor says issues around lightning should be raised as a future health and safety agenda following the tragic death nine-year-old Jordan Banks who was struck by lightning in Blackpool.

Jordan was playing football on the playing fields off School Road on Tuesday evening when he was hit, and sadly passed away from his injures.

His family has been left grief stricken by his loss.

Councillor Ann Burns said: "It is such a dreadful and terrible accident, and our hearts go out to the families.

"I don't think there is anything the Council could put in place at the moment but it is something that might be raised as a future agenda.

"It's such a terrible thing. A young man out playing as he should be, enjoying life and to have such a thing happen is awful.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this time."

Parents in the community have been left shaken by the incident and hold concerns for the safety of their own children when they are out playing.

Councillor Ann Thomson said: “It is such a terrible tragedy. In all my time I cannot recall another event like this, so we don’t want parents to panic.

"The best thing is to check the weather, and always know where your kids are when they are out playing.

"While these things are extremely rare, what happened is no less tragic."
