A 95-year-old woman has published a colourful book brimming with her childhood memories after being inspired by the late Sir Captain Tom Moore.

Ruth Moser, a resident at Stone Cross Care Home in Kendal, was ‘truly inspired’ by the feats of the iconic centenarian during the national Covid lockdowns and set about recording some of her childhood in a book she has now published.

‘95 Not Out’ has been colourfully illustrated by Ms Moser’s eldest daughter, Helen Francis, and begins in Liverpool during her school days.

The book has so far raised £300 for the Sir Captain Tom Moore Foundation a week after publishing.

“He made us feel, though we are very senior citizens, we can still take part and contribute to life,” said Ms Moser.

“95 Not Out!” pretty much sums up her amazingly positive attitude to life and her ability to cope with whatever is thrown at her,” said daughter Jane Benson.

“Brought up in Liverpool, her stories tell of many childhood memories including having to stand on her school chair if she got a sum wrong and her school desk if she got two wrong (she admits to spending a lot of time standing aloft!); of the excitement of celebrating King George V and Queen Mary coming to open the Mersey tunnel; of seeing a Zepplin flying over her house and many more anecdotes steeped in living history.”

The mother of four moved to Cumbria in 1967 when her first husband John Drury became headmaster of Heversham Grammar School and has been a constant member of the church in the area.

She has twelve grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Her book can be purchased from the bookstall at the back of Kendal Parish Church with sales supporting the Sir Captain Tom Moore Foundation.

Ms Benson added: “Sir Tom was certainly an inspiration for us all; .

"I think he would have been impressed by Ruth’s energy, commitment and sheer determination in getting her book together and be very proud of her .

"I certainly know, we, as her family most definitely are.”
