The body of a young female has been found on Askam Beach, police have confirmed.

Police alongside coastguard teams from Furness and Millom attended the beach in the early hours of this morning after a member of the public spotted the body.

Residents are now being asked to avoid the area as authorities conduct their investigations.

A police spokesperson said: “A multi-agency response is underway on the coast at Askam following the discovery of a body on the beach in the early hours of this morning. 

“It is believed the body has washed onto the shore overnight.

“Authorities were contacted at around 4.40am after a member of the public found the body of a young female of unknown age.

“Enquiries are on-going at this time into the circumstances, to work to identify the female and how she came to be in the water.
“People are asked to avoid the area at this time whilst the different agencies responding carry out their work.”
